چکیده

Measurements of carbon ̄ uxes in Arctic tundra landscapes are generally obtained through intensive ® eld work and involve the use of chamber and/or micrometeorological tower techniques. However, ® ndings in a variety of nonArctic ecosystems have demonstrated the potential of remote sensing-based techniques (particularly spectral vegetation indices) to provide estimates of CO2 exchange in amore timely and e cient manner. As the ® rst step towards modelling Arctic regional and circumpolar ̄ uxes of CO2 using remotely sensed data, we investigated the relationships between plot-level ̄ uxes of CO2 and a vegetation spectral re ̄ ectance index derived from hand-held radiometric data at two sites. These relationships were evaluated for variations in vegetation cover type and environmental factors using data collected during the short Arctic growing season. Overall, this study demonstrated a relationship between the Normalized Di€ erence Vegetation Index (NDVI) and measurements of mean site gross photosynthesis and ecosystem respiration at two sites in Arctic tundra ecosystems on the North Slope of Alaska.

Biotic controls over spectral reflectance of arctic tundra vegetation

In this study, seasonal field measurements of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), using a field spectroradiometer, and leaf area index (LAI), using a LI-COR LAI-2000 Plant Canopy Analyzer, were compared with above-ground phytomass data to investigate relationships between vegetation properties and spectral indices for four distinct tundra vegetation types at Ivotuk, Alaska (68.49...

Seasonal patterns of carbon dioxide and water fluxes in three representative tundra ecosystems in northern Alaska

Understanding the carbon dioxide and water fluxes in the Arctic is essential for accurate assessment and prediction of the responses of these ecosystems to climate change. In the Arctic, there have been relatively few studies of net CO2, water, and energy exchange using micrometeorological methods due to the difficulty of performing these measurements in cold, remote regions. When these measure...

Satellite-derived vegetation index and cover type maps for estimating carbon dioxide flux for arctic tundra regions

The spatial variabi]Lity and co-variability of two different types of remote sensing derivatives that portray vegetation and geomorphic patterns are analyzed in the context of estimating regional-scale CO 2 flux from land surfaces in the arctic tundra. For a study area encompassing the Kuparuk River watershed of the North Slope of Alaska, we compare satellite-derived maps of the normalized diff...

Mapping Arctic Plant Functional Type Distributions in the Barrow Environmental Observatory Using WorldView-2 and LiDAR Datasets

Multi-scale modeling of Arctic tundra vegetation requires characterization of the heterogeneous tundra landscape, which includes representation of distinct plant functional types (PFTs). We combined high-resolution multi-spectral remote sensing imagery from the WorldView-2 satellite with light detecting and ranging (LiDAR)-derived digital elevation models (DEM) to characterize the tundra landsc...
